A significant boost was offered to the European Year for Development 2015 by the three EU Institutions. The European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission signed a Joint Declaration on the European Year for Development at the EYD2015 Closing Ceremony in Luxembourg (9/12/2015).

The Joint Declaration is a tangible example of the commitment of the EU to continue its vital role in supporting development. The signed document highlights the achievements of the European Year in bringing development cooperation closer to the European citizens and especially the young people. At the same time, it links the legacy of the EYD2015 with the newly-adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  It asks everyone to take up the key lessons of the EYD2015 and boost the EU's efforts towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

In particular, the main legacy topics are:

  • Build on partnerships and engage new stakeholders beyond the development community
  • Address young people
  • Put people at the centre
  • Be interactive
  • Be fact-based
  • Keep the spirit of the EYD
