Regional leaders the world over will gather at the VII World Summit of Regional Governments
ORU Fogar is planning an international meeting of regional stakeholders in Rio de Janeiro on the 14th and 15th of April 2016.

The Awards Ceremony for the 1st Regional Good Practices Award, co-organised by the UNDP, will take place during the Summit.

On the 14th and 15th April 2016, the United Regions Organisation (ORU Fogar) will hold the VII World Summit of Regional Governments, an international meeting that will gather regional stakeholders the world over in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Untitled “Regional governments, how can we become more effective?”, the Summit offers an advocacy platform for intermediate governments to counter the recentralising trends arising from the recession.

Hosted by the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Fernando Pezão, it will address at a global level the question of how to achieve greater efficiency in cooperation among the nation-states, the regional governments and the local sectors.

The VII World Summit of Regional Governments will be opened in the Guanabara Palace on the 14th April in the afternoon, after two internal meetings of ORU Fogar’s Executive Bureau and General Assembly respectively. The Summit will gather regional leaders from all five continents, a year and a half after the VI Summit held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia (September 2014). It will be structured along six thematic roundtables that will discuss topics such as the sustainable territorial management, the regional powers, the regional governments funding, the keys to a successful relationship with the nation-states and the local levels, as well as the protection of cultural diversity.

The Awards Ceremony for the I Regional Good Practice Award, organised by ORU Fogar and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), will take place during the Summit. This contest, whose deadline to enter is the 15th of March, will select the five best practices implemented by regional governments that have produced positive results in their public management. Another event that will take place during the Summit is the signing of the RegionsAdapt initiative, led by the governments of Catalonia and Rio de Janeiro, nrg4SD and The Climate Group, which brings together regions worldwide for the creation of a common strategy in the field of climate change.

The registration for the VII World Summit of Regional Governments is open to all intermediate governments –regions, provinces and federal states– and regional networks the world over. The full program, the logistic information and the registration process are available on ORU's website. Registrations can be performed online through the platform oru2016assembly.eventbrite.es

About ORU Fogar

United Regions / Forum of Regional Governments and Global Associations of Regions (ORU Fogar) is a worldwide association, which aims at bringing together regions from all over the world and being their voice before the international organizations, promoting a global policy of balanced development and territorial cohesion. Its main objective is to seek the intermediate governments’ recognition as major

players in the global governance. It defends that the decentralization of the national states’ power towards other actors accelerates development; consequently fostering democracy by the proximity between these new actors and the citizens. ORU Fogar promotes a model based on a strong regional government, with capabilities and legally recognized powers and budgets. The organisation has regional governments and regional networks from all five continents as members.
